Read through KU subscription. So I paid something for it.So far, all the 4 and 5 stars are from advance copy readers, which I think is a problem on Amazon. I think they should be noted in some manner. Oh well.I enjoyed this book and definitely will read the second. Why I gave it only 3 stars is below. .The FMC, Charlotte, is hungry and eats at a restaurant but can’t find her wallet so she “dines and dashes“. The mafia guys catch her, take her to the Don, and he locks her up in a cell. Same night, his 6 1/2-year-old daughter whom he knows enough is found on his doorstep. He makes Charlotte be her nanny as payment. (You might wonder why the punishment for stealing $46 worth of food is so severe, but it leads to one of my favorite parts of the book where she and he are sparring about it.)I love Charlotte, the FMC. Feisty smart-mouth, she kept me laughing every time she ran into Lucio for the first part of the book. I think some reviewers are going to not like her because “she’s a B”, but she’s just willing to stand up for herself. Lucio is tall, dark, and handsome, with a pretty wicked scar on his face, which you don’t really hear anything about the rest of the story. I’m not saying you have to obsess about it, but I would think if you’re going to bring it up you might bring it up a couple more times. Lucio and Charlotte are both lacking caring parents, Lucio‘s father having been physically abusive and Charlotte’s mother wanting affection from the men in her life more than from her daughter. The little girl, Evie, is sketched pretty well, and I like her character as sometimes scared, sometimes sad, and very often happy when the two adults in her life act like they care about her. The author did a pretty good job of bringing Lucio from a cold, hard, violent character to one that actually enjoys caring for and spending time with his daughter. I think this book was a little long, especially considering that by the end of it the two main characters still haven’t really admitted anything to the other, although they have had hot smex.Secondary characters include Lucio‘s second in command, Adriano, who is a bit of a comic foil to his boss. Lucio’s mother is an interesting character, but I don’t know how much more of a role she’s going to play in the second book. Why only 3 stars? For some of the same reasons that I stated in one of her other books. I think they are bad enough that they bring the quality of the book down, which is a shame since Nicole does know how to tell a story and her dialogue is higher quality than a lot in this sub-genre.To move the plot along, the author gets lazy and hopes the reader just accepts dumb stuff.- She’s in a mafia compound, with tons of protection and guards, and a guy she knows Is able to climb into her room.- She gets punched in the face and has bruises, but the next day she goes to dinner and there’s no mention of bruising or using makeup or if anyone in restaurant notices.- There is an escape scene that just doesn’t make any sense. No cameras in the cell, no cameras anywhere in the freaking house? We find out about a secret gate? And the mafia Don believes her?- Lucio is at war with another group, and yet he gets in his personal car and takes the nanny and his daughter to dinner without any guards inside or outside the restaurant or on the street. The only reason there aren’t guards is so the author can write a dangerous chase scene.- at dinner, they’re sitting in a booth. It is described as the little girl taking a corner for herself, then Lucio, then Charlotte. Lucio is sitting between them. But then it’s described that Charlotte is putting her forehead against the little girl’s or rubbing her shoulder, and there’s no way that’s happening if Lucio is sitting between them. It’s not only physically impossible without her crawling over him, but at that point in her mind there would be no way she would do that.- They’ve just been attacked, but the next day he allows her to leave the house by herself to go grocery shopping. The author makes it sound like Lucio is finally giving her the freedom she wants, but come on, it’s the first time he’s letting her out and he’s not sending a guard with her? We’re supposed to believe he’s very protective of her?I write these things and give it only three stars because, despite my really liking the author and her stories, the author really needs to think about how to move the plot along without taking nonsensical shortcuts and writing these ridiculous scenarios. That said, and as I mentioned above, I have every intention of reading the second book. Hahaha. The cliffhanger is exactly what you think it’s going to be. I really liked the main characters and I am invested now, and so I want to see what happens. . Liar’s Lullaby is the first book in Nicole Fox’s Mazzeo Mafia series. In this book, readers meet Charlotte Dunn and Lucio Mazzeo. She is a young lady down on her luck. She barely makes ends meet with her low paying waitress job. Hungry and desperate, she goes into a high-class Italian restaurant, orders her meal, eats it, and walks away without paying for it. This catapults her into the world of Lucio Mazzeo. She becomes his prisoner. But Destiny intervenes when Lucio’s six-year-old daughter is dropped at his doorstep. Soon Charlotte is elevated to nanny. A chemistry exists between these two which ignites into romance. However, Charlotte harbors a secret that can destroy them. What will happen?Ms. Fox does a remarkable job immersing her readers into her multi-layered characters. She introduces readers to the lifestyle and culture the Mazzeo Crime Family. Even in this dark criminal world, goodness exists. Her plot is fast paced and filled with action on two fronts—the crime family and the couple. Ms. Fox is masterful in her descriptive language. She paints vivid and searing scenes that reveal much about each character.
